I was spending every day of the week on social media. , Instagramming, Facebooking, Snapchatting, texting....it was something every single day, without taking a break. I was having a hard time disconnecting, and a serious case of FOMO (fear of missing out)
I kept thinking I needed to be present or I needed the followers or whatever. I mean, there's nothing wrong with a little social media to keep up with friends and family. But I was becoming a little too crazy about it. And I think we're becoming a society that depends on social media to be our social LIFE.
So, I made a decision to take a social media break. At first, I literally stopped looking at social media for an entire week. I expected my head to explode. When that didn't happen, I realized I seriously needed to take more breaks, so I came up with a plan. I mean, sometimes you just need a break. A social media break.
In fact, I’ve found the days I take my social media break, I’m instantly re-inspired.
I read.
I go to the beach.
I take a long walk.
I rest.
I recharge.
To literally put my phone away & disconnect is liberating. It’s freeing. And it makes a
difference in my mental well being.
With that, here is how I take my social media break:
For me, that day is Sunday; always.
There’s something special about Sundays.
I also noticed that just about everyone keeps to themselves on a Sunday. Did you ever notice that?
So yes, Sunday is my day for my social media breaks. It's the day where I can fully recharge.
GET COMFORTABLE. For me this not getting out of my comfy jammies if I don't absolutely have to. None of that underwire bra shit or lacy thong underwear for my Sunday! Comfort is key! I find a good series or two on Netflix and I binge watch TF out of them. Having a good book to read is also essential. (Right now I'm reading Stephen King's "The Outsider" ) Doing a quick workout at the gym & then coming home, getting in bed, & doing whatever I want is my idea of Sunday Bliss.
Sometimes I pick my Netflix shows days before my social media break day. There’s something exciting about knowing I’ll have a full day to myself to just Netflix & chill.
I really love to keep the day to myself. To really enjoy the whole experience & be still.
Or at least put them on Silent.
If you're feeling rebellious, letting your phone die is always an option.
Always though, put your phone in another room. Then grab your book or remote and chill.
Ok so if you absolutely can’t take a day off, plan your posts ahead of time. There are SO many Apps for this. Edit & schedule your Instagram with Hootsuite. So easy to use. That way you don’t have to worry about posting.
You can use this for Facebook & Twitter as well. I swear by Hootsuite for all my social media scheduling.
If you’re DYING to let your friends in on what you're doing, YOU STILL CAN.
HERE’S HOW: Snap a bunch of extra Snaps the day before on AIRPLANE MODE. Then in
the morning when you wake up, take it off AIRPLANE MODE & post them live. VOILA!
I'm not really a Pinterest person, but I found you can schedule your Pinterest posts with Pingraphy.
And I write a couple blog posts a week, so they are ready to go anytime. Just not on Sunday :)
So there, now you really have no excuse.
OK, so here's the thing: don’t just do this once & then never do it again.
This is something I’ve been doing for the last six-ish months & it’s SO refreshing. I swear I’m more alert and ready for my week ahead when I've unplugged for an entire day.
Really try this: like take the WHOLE DAY OFF. Really commit. No cheating or peeking! You can even let your friends & family know ahead of time that Sunday's will be your break from social media.
● What day will you choose for your social media break?
● Grab a good book.
● Create an experience you like with music, candles, blankets.
● Journal, read, rest, sweat, hang out with your pups...just RECHARGE
● Take the first tiny step by starting this week.
● Rinse & repeat.
Let me hear your feedback! Are you going to do this? Do you already do this? What is your plan?
Sometimes the littlest things in life make the biggest differenc.
